Tony Cochran Guitars Custom #53
John Vadnais used to hang this electric guitar on a hook next to the grill he worked 6 days per week. It was Joe Junior's Restaurant over on 6th Avenue in NYC. Between vats of greasy fries & pounds of bloody burgers, he practiced his chops for hours. When the lunch crowds got overwhelming he'd sigh, hang it up, and get to flipping. His one big shot came in 1969 when a very stoned Jerry Garcia stopped in for a burger, heard him jamming in the kitchen and invited him to audition for the band. After his shift, in a hurry to make time, his hand slipped when he pulled the guitar from the hook and it became partially submerged in the deep fryer. He burnt both hands severely trying to retrieve it. So, instead of auditioning, he spent the night getting his fingers wrapped at the Cabrini Medical Center over on East 19th Street. The scars ended his guitar career, but not his cooking career. The guitar hung there as a sad reminder of his bad luck until he died in 1996 from inhaling too many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (grease fumes). R.I.P., John. I degreased it and I'll find it a good home.
