Tony Cochran Guitars Custom #55
This is rumored to be a Philco electric guitar prototype. Before Ford Motor Compny purchased them on December 11, 1961, Philco was floundering and had filed for bankruptcy protection. Manny Taured headed a committee to come up with an electronic product that would save Philco. Since his cousin, Bobbie Rydell, had just become famous with his new hit "Wild One", he felt certain the future was Rock and Roll. With Philco's electronic know-how, they would fill that future with fine musical instruments. His big gun for this presentation was the S.D., or "Super Deluxe", as it says on the six-holed Halpering Chamber. It also had a white celluloid Culspar, or "Jack Rabbitter", as Manny liked to call it. It filled in flubbed or dead notes with tone approximations. Research and Development rang it up as a 'NO Sale." Following the meeting, the guitar languished in the trunk of Manny's car for years. His mechanic found it when changing a tire and traded it for an oil change and free tire rotation. Quite the bargain!
